PUBLIC NUISANCE: SMITH V THE POLLUTERS

Picture1.jpg
ABOUT THIS PROJECT

To safeguard the future, Māori activist Mike Smith (Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Kahu) is using an old British law for a new purpose - to take civil action against Aotearoa's most prominent corporate polluters.

In mid-2027, the High Court in Auckland will witness a groundbreaking climate court case, Smith v Fonterra and Ors, where Mike Smith sues six major companies for their greenhouse gas emissions.

Public Nuisance will document this legal battle, highlighting the unique strategy of Smith's team as they retool ancient British Common Law to address modern climate damage. This precedent-setting case aims to protect the land and culture of Aotearoa, with implications for countries worldwide.
